I just purchased a Toshiba XM5302B CD Rom Drive.

The drive didn't come with any disk or drivers.
Does anyone know where I can get them?

Also, can I hook this CD-Rom up to my Gravis Max?

Thanx,
Jon

Subject: Re: xwing

There are two files for xwing, xwngsnds.zip and xwingupd.zip. They are
definitely not on epas, unless someone has put them into the submit
directory recently. You might find them on orst but I would attempt to
log into wuarchive (better try at 4:00am or you probably won't get on) or
the UK site.

Or, get megaem 3.03b or 3.04b. They fix a lot of problems and while they
aren't perfect yet you don't need (can't use) the aforementioned .zip
files with xwing and pmode megaem since it uses a preset instrument bank
file. You may be able (I will try soon, meant to do so but forgot) to
set up a special bank for megaem 3.0xb which includes those patches, I
don't know. I'll try it and see.

Subject: TV GUS patch problems?

Has anybody experienced any problems using the Terminal Velocity GUS
patch? Before I got it, I was using the crappy little SB clone taking up
useful space in my computer that I keep around for compatability, and I
had no problems with the game... Once I installed the patch, and tried
to run it with my GUS, I have problems up the wazoo...

The first one is that I can't run the music in either stereo or surround
mode... If I try, I get all sorts of static, and noise... Secondly, I
have a Gravis Gamepad hooked up to the joystick port on the SB clone, and
I get horrible drift when using it.... I've tried using the port on the
GUS, but no games ever recognize it... I can't figure out how to disable
the port on the SB... On top of that, I have a game port on my I/O card
that I can never get anything to recognize either....

If I can't figure this out, I'm going to be stuck listening to the music
played through a cdappy SB that won't even do sampling rates of over 22kHz...

ARGH!

I'm running this on:

Pentium 60, 32MB RAM
S3 801/805 chipset (cheesy video card)
GUS revision 2.4 1M

I'd appreciate any help anybody can give...

Thanks!

Hey Timmerman,

Look, the lines had LH's and devicehigh's cause they were cut and
pasted from another boot that did need memory manager's to load CD-ROM
driver's high. Regardless, this setup does run Descent faster than
with memory managers, which was the question i was answering.

It's a fact that memory managers do give you a bit more memory with a
speed trade off. They slow the system down a bit for some programs.
That's what i was refering to. Generally, if you don't need them,
don't use them. The guy asked for max speed, and that's what i gave
him.

And as the accusation of me running Win95 and not knowing shit, um, i
was refering to OS/2 which is a very capable memory manager and OS
that provides "more than a few extra kB". Like i said. Next time i'll
be blunt.

About the IRQ's... it's true. It may not help sound quality any and it
may irrelevant, but that's how it works. Don't flame me for posting
arcane PC tech info.

About the drivers, i was refering to people who hoped the NT driver
that guy is working on would work for Win95, not the other way around.
I was hoping for a response from the author of the driver, not to be
flamed.

More relevant stuff:
Yes, the new MegaEm works well with GUS/SBPro setup. In the
interactive setup for MegaEm, disable the SB Emulation. Works fine on
Tie Fighter.

And in general, i agree with the call for a word from Gravis. There
are a lot of people here who would like support for their non-DOS OS's
and i'm with them. Hell, most people would like a Win3.1 driver that
is consistant and doesn't require user input depending on the
application being run.
It seems the on going Win3.1 driver ordeal is like one long beta
program with no end in sight. Not a good sign if Gravis chooses to
support more than 1 OS.

How about a sign Gravis? Oh, and kudos to Bret at GravisTech@aol.com.
He may not have detailed answers, but he does reply...

AND:
Mr. Timmerman, if you disagree with my comments, or my trying to help
people, take it to ME, not the digest.

This is enough to make me never buy anything from Gravis again. Windows 95,
OS/2, Windows NT, and Linux are the way the world seems to be going and they
are still relying on NMI and protected mode? They may have produced a great
piece of hardware, but their software is severely lacking. Unfortunately,
now that I have heard the GUS I can't go buy a SB and be satisfied.

I really want to hear that gravis is going to get a programming team and knock
out drivers for all these operating systems *yesterday* and SB compatibility
TSRs that will run under something other than plain DOS/Windows. Otherwise my
next sound card purchase will definitely not be gravis. Likewise with almost
everyone I know.

Well, from personal experience, there are at least two versions of the DF
demo floating around. The one that was on all the cover CDs a few months
back did NOT support the gravis, whereas the one that's on the Full
Throttle CD (yah, the bought one) does. Okay?

Subject: Toshiba 4x vs Sony 4x

Hi everyone,

I would like some opinions regarding the 4x SCSI CD-Roms from
Toshiba 3601 and SONY like how do they differ in speed and which one is
the best and also what functions are available on the faceplate? Any
help would be appreciated. Thank you.

P.S. Also, do anyone of them come with audio cables for the GUS Max?

Subject: Need info on TEAC 4X CDROM

I just purchased the Teac Quad speed cdrom drive but couldn't get it to work with my Gus Max. I connected it to the Panasonic connector, jumpered the Panasonic enabled jumper and tried several base addresses (320, 340, 360).

The Teac driver loads and so does Mscdex but when I switch to the cd drive and type dir, the system locks.

For now I'm using the 8bit controller card that comes with the drive.

Three questions:
1-Will it work off the Gus Max?
2-If it will work, is there a way to get the audio cable connected to the Gus?
3-Is there an advantage in having it connected to the Gus over the Teac card?

To Micheal:

Thanks for correcting my "finger fart".

Manley Question:

His drivers provide:
16bit, 44kHz playback, no volume control, native mod player (UltiMOD),
native midi coming soon. No recording. Thats in OS/2 proper.

In a DOS VM:
It virutalizes the card so that DOS software works fine (games,
XTC-Play, Cubic, Playmidi, etc.). SBOS and MegaEM will not work, but
his driver provides GM-Emulation when registered. Win3.1 drivers are
VxD's and will not run under OS/2 so no native Win sound, but you can
load the MPU401 driver for windows and he says it'll work and i'm sure
it does.
They are designed to smoothly allow DOS sessions and this is why they
are good.

Hey, I got a response from Gravis@aol.com. My question was:

At the time i thought there was a problem with Manley's drivers, but
it was just a piece of corrupted software, NOT his problem.

Anyway, Gravis's response was:

>I'm really sorry, and to be quite frank with you, I DON'T GIVE A DAMN!!!!!!!

Not the kind of attitude i like from a company i paid good money to.
We are the customer, and they exist because of us. They can also cease
to exist because of us. I seriously hope this was a joke... but i'm
not laughing.
