I use a DX-21, which also lacks aftertouch and velocity sensing. It's not really
a problem for entering data for a sequence, where you can add those things on an
"after the fact" basis. When I want to capture something, I just play it through
and adjust the velocities afterwards. Even when I use pitch bend, I'm likely to
adjust it in the sequence.

If you plan to do live performances with the keyboard, however, you would need
at least velocity sensitivity for decent expression on a realtime basis.

The file TG55drms.zip in submit on epas contains a pair of bass drums (and
lots of other things), one with a flat acoustic sound, one with a 'punchy'
sound. Give them a try. At least part of the problem with bass drums on the
GUS, though, is simply the low volume levels. That's why the bass drum
generally sounds so absent.

Chris.

P.S. Still stewing over Sam's enormous post on custom patch stuff. May post
again later.

Lesse... well, I'm using the MIDI adapter which came with my SBPro. Both the
in and out are connected. I have been able to get it to work using WJ to
trigger the Boss, but it doesn't work the other way around. I can get away
with this, tho.
Another-and more annoying-problem: I can't hear the GUS patch sounds
when I play my drum machine. It is definitely receiving the MIDI info, as
playback is fine. It _does_ play the sounds when I'm auditioning in Patch
Manager, so it seems like everything should be cool. Note that my Thru and
Realtime is set on port two (the Midi interface).

[various comparisons of saxes deleted]

Could you explain a bit the way various saxes sound and what makes it sound
like that, if you know... You seem quite knowledgeable with these instruments.

The problem is to find a source that has both ahhs and ohhs. The only way
is to either sample a GM device (they all suck at this anyway), or to go
at a choir practice with a pair of mikes and a DAT.

I have percussions up to 87, like the GM standard. The only patch over 87
in GS is applause, in bank 48 (orchestra set). Other patches on some
synths are not GM or GS. I suppose the TG has some instruments over 87.
Oh yeah, there is also the CM64 which has percussions over 87. Up to 108
to be exact.

(btw, yesterday the music digest was bigger than the general digest!)

I've been working through John Capps's informative PATREF23. Some of the
program files he mentions seem to be gone from epas or oak. They are
PED2, PATCH.EXE (for DOS) with PATCHKIT.ARJ and TUTOR.ZIP, and
GLDWAV20.ZIP. Can anybody direct me to them, or advise whether they have
been replaced by later versions (except for PED2)? Grazie. Emory Menefee.
