Is it Gravis' intent to keep the software proprietary like Nintendo did,
or do they want outside interest in developing software that will support
their helmet?

I'd like to see Gravis sell this keyboard separately as well, for $200 or
less.

Subject: PowerChords problems :(

..i just built a '486; i bought my GUS a few weeks before & had it in my
old '286 just to check it out, and i noticed that USS8 has a problem
in *both* computers whereby the screen gets wiped out by the mouse
cursor...

..but i don't plan on using USS8 much, so the *real* help i'd like
(although if you have a solution to the above thanks!) is this:
..the powerchords demo works fine, but in the actual program and in
the tutorial i get no sound...i never tried these on my '286, so i
don't know if i had the same problem there or not...

..i've tried many permutations of the various setting to no
avail...any ideas floating around out there? ...i *would* like to
make great use of this program...oh, btw, it's version 1.0 and i
haven't the $$$ to upgrade, if that's your answer :(

 ..thanks...

Subject: Sampling and legal issues

The freedom to use 256K samples in patches has me rushing back to resample
old loops at 44.1kHz. It also has me recording really _long_ (well,
comparitively long, four second or so) loops of thrash guitars and
drumbeats. This brings to mind a question or two about the legality of
sampling.

Certainly the act of sampling my CDs and using them as building blocks for
songs is legal; after all, i can make a cassette copy of the CD to play in
my Walkman. I also know that i can include samples in my songs and make
copies of the works for friends, because i'm not _selling_ the music. My
quandaries, then, are twofold:

1. Would it be illegal to sample a disc, use the sample in a song, and
release the song on a commercially sold, independently released album?

2. I noticed that when Francois Dion covered C+C Music Factory with his
GUS to show what the card was capable of, he did not upload the .MID
with custom patches to EPAS; rather, he samples the finished copy into
a WAV and uploaded that. What legal factors lie behind this decision,
and what are their implications for my own work?

On a slightly different note, Epas had been noticeably barren of user-made
patches as of late (excepting discopat.zip and hugepats.zip). I'm guilty
of this too, but some of us Gravis samplers should ZIP up a meg or so and
upload them . . .

Matthew M. Nordan OOO OOO Allan Aguirre, where are you?
    mnordan@minerva.cis.yale.edu OOOOOOO
