Subject: Cakewalk users' mailing list rises again

Morning all

Due to the requests from various people on the Cakewalk saga, I thought I
would copy this message from the administrator of the said list. The
Cakewalk list, as most of you surmised, is for the Cakewalk sequencing
package. I am a recent convert to Cakewalk 2.0 for Windows and am VERY
impressed with it's capabilities :)

Anyway, enough babble and on with the real thing...

Subject: The Cakewalk users' mailing list rises again!

As most of you have probably noticed, the list has been extremely quiet for
the last two weeks. The reason for this is that the Cakewalk list was
temporarily disabled due to a problem with a brain dead mail gateway in the
Netherlands. One of the list subscribers was behind this gateway, and his
mail was being bounced by the gateway with an invalid `From' address.
Since the cakewalk list was set up to reject all messages from unsubscribed
addresses, this bounced message was bounced back to the mail gateway, who
then bounced it back to the list. You get the picture... Our mailer
finally barfed when the bounced message grew to ~210K in size.

There have been a few changes to the list configuration to help prevent this
sort of thing from happening again. The most important is that messages
distributed to the list will be set so that replies will be directed to the
original sender ONLY, rather than the the whole list. This means that if
you want your reply to be distributed to the list members, then you will
have to explicitly include the list alias (cakewalk@lists.colorado.edu) in
the To: or Cc: lines.

Another side effect of this change is that you may receive bounces from
invalid addresses that are subscribed to the list. These messages have in
the past been redirected to me, but because of the change in the From:
address you may find that they are now sent to you. Please note that these
messages don't mean that your message wasn't distributed, so you shouldn't
resubmit your message if you receive a few strange mail messages from
`MAILER-DAEMON' or the like. Nobody wants to find their mailbox stuffed
with this kind of junk, so please unsubscribe from the list if you are
losing your account.

As a consequence of this change, I will be enforcing a stricter policy on
mail bounces than I have in the past. I will automatically unsubscribe any
address which regularly generates bounces, regardless of the reason. If
your mail link is flaky and you find yourself suddenly unsubscribed, then
this is probably the reason why.

One last note: The e-mail address you sent your subscription request from
is the address that will receive all messages sent to you from the mailing
list. Please note that the list is configured to reject messages sent to
the list from addresses which don't appear on the list of subscribers. If
you sent your subscription request from a different address than the one
you normally use for e-mail, you should probably unsubscribe from the list,
and then resubscribe from your normal e-mail address. If you don't have
the welcome message around any more (tsk, tsk), here's a quick refresher on
how to unsubscribe:

To remove your e-mail address from this list, you must
send a message to `listserv@lists.Colorado.EDU' with
        the phrase
                        unsubscribe cakewalk

in the body of the message.

If you have problems unsubscribing, or if you ever have problems with the
mailing list rejecting your messages (these will be from `cakewalk' or
`listserv', and will give instructions on how to subscribe to the list),
you can contact me at mccreary@ucsu.colorado.edu.

Subject: GUS 8-bit sampling

Yeah! I's like to add my voice to the complaints about 8-bit sampling on the
GUS...but has anyone actually seen any 16-bit daughter boards coming from
Advanced Gravis? If so, does it cost many pennies/cents/yen/whatever
currency you like?

One small note about Surround on the Gravis....download the demo 'Second Reality'
by Future Crew if ya want to here surround sound on your GUS...you'll
need 512K on board memory (DRAMS that is) 'though.

Bye

Subject: Hypertext Patchmaking Reference

I just uploaded a Windows Help (Hypertext) format of the patching.wri
document that I uploaded before. There are only minor revisions in the
content, basically it has the same Table of Contents:
      1. FINDING SOME SAMPLES--the Kurzweil K2000 Archive
and converting sounds with GoldWave 2.0(tm).
      2. THE JOYS OF LOOPING--Tips on looping, Forward and
	Bi-directional
      3. MINIMIZING THE SIZE OF YOUR SAMPLES--Self-explanatory
      4. FURTHER SOURCES OF SAMPLES--Where to get them, how
	to convert them.
      5. YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS--No, it's not what you think!

The format is now Hypertext, though, with the option for
imbedding graphics and sound in the future.
Have fun!

Subject: Windows Video Drivers/Midisoft

   Hi there..

Just wondering if anyone knew of any Windows Trident drivers for the
8800 series cards? I have 512k on my card, and can't find any Trident drivers
that don't support the 8900 series only. My card has 512k so I should be able
to at least get 640x480x256. Running in normal VGA mode is not that great when
running Midisoft's Recording Sessions as half of the screen is chopped off. I
have been looking for this/these Trident drivers forever! Is it possible that
someone could send the Windows 3.1 Trident High-Res drivers to:
jdimich@ajiant.dnet.dupont.com as soon as possible? I know that they must
exist somewhere, so I would really appreciate it if someone could dig them up
for me. Thanx in advance!

						Sincerely,
						Jason DiMichele

P.S. Does anyone know how to edit Cakewalk Pro v2.0 to allow the GUS to load
patches without having to load them manually before? My group makes
techno/hardcore, and we don't want the GM set loaded..;) Also, we want
to be able to test different sounds at random. This is why we must
be able to get Cakewalk Pro to work much like Midisoft Recording
      Sessions.
