Subject: poor 8bit sampling on the GUS?

I just got MCS Stereo for my 486 machine and am sorely disappointed in the
sample quality I'm getting with my GUS. I try sampling at 44K, and it
sounds no better than about 10-15K 8bit samples to me. Sample playback is
fine, but sample aquisition seems to kinda' suck.

The only reason I say this, is I have a $90 hardware/software package on
my Amiga (GVP DSS8+) that does 8bit sampling at up to 42K in stereo (56K
in mono), and it sounds VERY good for what I want to use it for. Nice and
clear. So... I know 8bit samples can sound very good, although not nearly
as good as 16bit. However, I just can't seem to get decent results from
the GUS.

Oh, by the way, I've got an internal CDROM/controller combo whose line
out is plugged directly into the line in on the GUS. When I just play
CDs "through the GUS", everything sounds wonderful. I'm using the line
out on the GUS to feed a mixer/amp/studio ref monitor setup. The CD is
also what I'm sampling from.

MIDI output sounds find, WAV playback sounds fine, sample editing is fine,
I just can't MAKE a decent sample.

AGAIN... I know I'm only dealing with 8bits, but I also know for a fact
8bits can sound A LOT better... especially at 44K samp/sec!
