Does it work? I know this is kinda stupid, but are you sure you are sending
something on the midi bus? My six-trak disables it's keyboard then windows
start (a midi sense is probably sent). I have to reenable it or shut it off
and on, or only turn it on after windows has started (or is it after cakewalk
is started?... cant remember). From the rest of the info it looks however
like your keyboard does work on the midi out... what about the midi in?

Could be a conflict, software config, bad cable, or the M1 is frozen...

>When I try to record by sending midi data from the Korg M1 to the sequencer,
>little LED lite over the MIDI in port flickers(showing activity), but the
>sequencer registers absolutely NADA!

Are you sure you selected the Ultrasound Midi In Port and Ultrasound Midi Out
Port? This is different from the MME driver you were talking about (either
the midi mapper or the GUS synth driver).

If you have some conflict with the GUS midi, you'll probably have a conflict
with the MPU401 too. I have heavy traffic on my GUS midi port and it react
like my MPU401 so dont dish it. It is a good interface with decent drivers
(unlike the PAS16 which drops midi events faster than you can say "ay carumba").

If you want some more help, you need to give the info in params.txt, what you
have on the irqs and dmas... BTW, you wouldn't have a SCSI controller on 330h
would you? (and the gus on 230h, meaning the midi port is also on 330h...)

I know that wuarchive.wustl.edu and nctuccca.edu.tw (ftp sites) have
some music files... I think only .MOD files, Amiga .MODs in the Amiga
base in both cases if I remember right. cs.uwp.edu only has song lyrics
and the like...
Any others?

But this is not a good idea to enveloppe the sample itself. If you do, you
will have a lot of problem to loop it. I hope that patch maker heavy will
come out rapidly. BTW, patch maker lite features are not cast in stone...
maybe they'll add a few intermediate decays... The author said he would
add a thing or two to patch maker lite, so, hopefully that'll be it (and the
percussive patches 0.0 frequency scaling...)

> Cool Edit has some nice effects, like delay, echo, flange, etc., and also

Surf also has some effects (chorus, reverb, noise gate etc...) and audiolab
too (ring modulator and maybe resonance, not sure). Only problem is that
these software dont work on 16 bit .wav. If you do get them to work, i'd like
to know however...

> Is this in reference to Patch Maker Lite (PMAK110, or PMAKER)?
> Which other GUSDK program(s) allows envelopes?

Patch.exe. Check references to it in patchkit.arj and tutor2.zip

> And what are PATCH.EXE and PED.EXE?

Patch, see above. Ped.exe is a windows patch editor with full envelope control
but has some bugs and is not realtime like pmaker. It is a complement however
(it doesn't support wavesamples >64K) to pmaker.

> -djkc

I hadn't noticed it was you djkc! So, how do you find the GUS? Have you tried
the 808 and 909 drums? Check out patches1.arj too (and iwannac.arj). Also by
the time you read this, i should have put tracx.zip on epas (4 percussions
from circuit breaker's trac-x on probe). Check also on ftp.reed.edu, in the
eps/samples/aiff/numbers (or something like that) you'll find 200 breakbeats
from hip hop, techno, disco etc... Speed them up and it's techno time.

Maybe I should download CoolEdit, but isn't it just a waveform editor?
That is somewhat different to a patch editor, which uses just a small
sample of waveform, looped and eveloped to give the desired sound.
Similarly, the LFOs are supported in the GUS hardware - Patch Maker
does not need to alter the waveform to get these effects.

>And what are PATCH.EXE and PED.EXE?

PATCH.EXE is (as someone said) in GUSDK201.zip. I haven't looked at
the update for it that someone mentioned.
It is a DOS Patch Editor from Gravis, and is (in)famous for being
difficult to use. There are a couple of tutorials on its use on
the ftp site (tutor???.zip?).

PED (I seem to remember it being PED2.EXE) is also on the ftp site
(can't remember zip name). It's a windows program allowing some of
the patch parameters to be edited. I seem to remember that I could
never understand the numeric values that it gave for the envelope
parameters.

I'd still like to see a full explanation of how the six envelope
stages are used depending on the various control bits (e.g. sustain)
in the patch header.

Subject: Gus Jam CD-ROM

I was reading a few back issues and noticed the talk of the Gus jam project,
and it got me thinking. How about a CD-ROM full of Gravis samples. I know it
would be hard to implement and is hardly realistic, but wouldn't it be cool to
have hundreds of megs of samples, and then being able to send your songs to a
large audience. In essence, a Super General Midi Standard. It would certainly
turn my crank. A single copy of a CD-ROM can be made for under $200, probably
$50 for 50, and nickels and dimes as you get into mass production. I know its
just a dream <sigh> but at least let me know if any of you share it. Also,
future versions of GUS will likely hold more RAM, 4megs or so, and large
samples can really clutter up your hard drive.

I really dont seem to have time at the moment to do work on the gus-midi FAQ.
Maybe I should just clean out the bits that are out of date
and mercilessly reduce its size.

Cool alters the samples, patch maker alters the lfos and envelope generator
parameters that control the hardware inside the gus.
I think Im right in saying that you sound really aim to have maximum volume
samples to get maximum dynamic range out of the gus.
Still whatever works is good.

ped is a program in its own right, patch.exe is part of the old 2.01 SDK
Note that pmaker110.zip has new drivers in it that allow the use of 256k
samples, patch.exe doesnt support these.

Envelopes are fun. I've had good results with a really fast attack
and a little 'hump' at the start to make a drum like thump and then
really slow decay

I think you have to select the 'ultrasound input port' or some such as the midi
device in use by each track. I dont have any external midi toys but this is
how the other stuff works in cubase, or so I believe.

Patch.exe is a patch editor for DOS and though the most powerful is not user
friendly due to a lack of docs. This can be found in the SDK on epas. However if
you get Francois Dion's patch creating tutorials - patchkit.arj and tutor2.zip
in ....\sound\patches\util, you will have the best for creating patches.

PED is a windows patch editor, quite basic but may complement Pmake110.

Some questions:

1. when selecting a melodic bank diffeternt from 0 (general midi patches) the
names of the patches are still the ones from bank 0. Is it not possible to use
the patch names in the patch files to generate the names in powerchord.

2. how come that the cooldrum demo has no techno drum patterns :-(

3. is the possibility still open to upgrade from the GUS version to the PRO
