Do you have a revision 3.4 GUS? If so, then you're probably fine.
Ultrajoy causes the SB/MIDI IRQ time out problem when it is run. This
probably has something to do with the fact that the MIDI port and
joystick port on the 3.4 GUSes can be enabled or disabled by software,
and Ultrajoy is doing something to disable the ports. Remove Ultrajoy
from your autoexec.bat and see if you still get the timeout problems
using the diagnostics in setgus. Good luck!

Phat.

I don't know enough electronics to know whether an incorrectly
wired MIDI box could blow anything on the GUS, but I would
emphasize that there is nothing wrong with the circuit in the
FAQ.

This problem arose because someone thought that the circuit diagram
indicated the *positions* of the various pins on the ICs.
It doesn't - they are arranged purely so as to draw the diagram
without too many crossed wires. The pin numbers given are correct,
and the pins on the ICs are numbered in the way that they are on
all ICs.
