There is a Windows API call called OutputDebugString() which is used by
programmers to output messages while their program is running without using a
dialog box. The output is routed to the AUX DOS device, which typically can be
a terminal. Or this can be re-routed to a second (monochrome) screen. More
likely, the programmer uses a program such as WINRIP, or DBWIN to trap the
messages and display them.

When there is no such program loaded, the output goes to AUX, and since you
likely have no AUX defined, there's an error.

It is likely that either the application programs or the drivers are using
this call and forgot to take it out of the released code.

Subject: I blew my GUS's MIDI ???

I blew my midi (whatever transistor or something) on my GUS !!!
Well at least I think I did? This is what happened...

I made the circuit as from the FAQ - pins were wrong see below for
diagram, found out what I had done wrong and bought new chips for the
circuit and reconnected it up only now nothing - I had the circuit checked
with an oscilliscope - sure enough my midi keyboard was sending data
to the card right up to the D type connector but nothing, and my GUS was
not sending anything !
Then I found out that the SB/MIDI IRQ gave me timeouts on every IRQ possible
2 - 15, I then concluded that I have blown my midi part on the GUS because
SBOS works find e and everything else on the card is fine.

I probably am very lucky that I did not blow anything else - but I am so
cross because I REALLY wanted to use MIDI IN ( I am not really worried about
MIDI OUT) anyway thats how the story goes - sad and frustrating !!!

Anybody care to tell me why it blew ? I have tried to understand it and
as far as I can figure ( the way I had it connected ) it should have
blown my opto isolator and even then the current could not get to
pin-15 rx (to my card) cause my inverter would not have let any current
through it ( IT WAS CONNECTED IN THE SAME WAY AS THE OPTO ISOLATOR )
in other words pin1 to pin2 of the inverter was actually pin1 to pin14 ??!!

Ok PLEASE maybe you can tell me I am totally wrong and I have not blown
the midi part of my GUS.

here is my circuit diagram

Subject: Multichannel MTMs and MODs

Hey there!
I am looking for some good (8 or more tracks) MTMs and MODs to
try out with MultiTracker...I wanna see what it can do before I
register it...
Has anybody out there registered this program? I am just
wondering how it works? I'm looking forward to the GUS Patch
capability!
Now all I need is that 16-bit recording interface...
    Thanks!

Subject: New File at Epas.

Greetings all,
Just to let ya know I just uploaded this file to archive.epas.utoronto.ca:

Cool Edit v.1.31 is a waveform editor
with features such as: Echo, Flange,
Stretch with and without affecting
pitch, delay, brainwave synchronizer,
envelope, filter, and music generator.
Supports RIFF extra information, cue
list and play list. View waves as
amplitude or frequency plots. Analyze
component frequencies. Wave scripts let
you play back complex operations.

This program was written for
Windows. This is the best WAV editor that
I have come across so far. It is user friendly, and has more features
than I can shake a digital stick at...

Well I don't know about CMF-files but ROL files seems to be a slight tweak
of MIDI-format with Roland MT-32 instrument map. At least it sounded fine
when I took the .ROL's from Elite 2, renamed them .MID. Set up a MT-32
instrument-emulation-map in the midi-mapper; loaded them into cakewalk
and playd'em. Couldn't load them with Playmidi though, complained about
unrecognized or bad something or other...

Subject: sdx10.zip problems

I just downloaded a program today from sweaty.palm.criz.nz (well, I think
that is the address) called sdx10.zip
This program can convert a .sds or .sdx file into a .wav file. Apparently,
these files are basically sample dumps from real samplers or keyboards.
Since this program could be useful in creating patches for the GUS (the
text file that comes with the program mentions that these .sds and .sdx
files are on various ftp sites) I decided to try it. The only problem is
that most of the sample files that come with it are 15 bit (the few 8 bit
files DID work) and I can't seem to get the convert function of this
program to convert these to either 8 or 16 bit format (the playfile program
that came with the GUS won't play 15 bit .wavs
Basically my question is: Is there any way to convert these 15 bit files
(I'm assuming that once I find more of these files they will probably not
be in 8 or 16 bit exclusively) and where can I find more .sds
or .sdx files?

Comments or answers most appreciated!
