=====! interview !=============================================================

        Session Start: Fri Nov 05 23:47:54 1999

        *** xhale has joined #demojournal

<|ps|> howdy! :) so who are you?

<xhale> hey, well.. i'm a 20 year old guy from norway..
                studying design at the moment

<|ps|> whats your name 20 year old guy from norway? :)

<xhale> hehe.. well Erik Knive Skodvin is my full name.

<|ps|> :) and why am i interviewing you? (i.e. what do you do on the
               scene? :) )

<xhale> well.. i'm making some music and doing some gfx stuff
mostly.. also been trying some flash/html stuff lately..
i'm pretty active at the moment realy.. ;D

        <|ps|> in what groups? :)

<xhale> hmm.. i think i have pretty many groups.. i'm not sure of
them all but this is whom i know i'm member of :
dcs( dual crew shining on amiga), phrenetik, nocturnal,
theralite, kalamity .. and a new started "group" called
miasmah wich is only for me ;D
                otherwise i do much freelancing

<|ps|> lets go by parts then.. heard the shining was breaking from
dual crew.. is that true? :)

<xhale> yeah damn.. i heard something about that myself.. but i
really dunno what's happening.. and neither does any of the
other guys in dcs ive talked to lately.. . maybe it's just
all rumours or something.. anyway , hope it's not true,
cause then i wouldnt know which part to keep beeing with ,
and i must say that dc.. or s doenst sound that cool as
                dcs ;D

<|ps|> haha, who is phrenetik? :)

<xhale> hmm.. well.. phrenetik is a group with some friends of mine
that got started back in 94/95 .. i joined them first in 98
i think.. but they have always been my friends at real life ,
and i realy like them.. but we have never been any known
group.. lately we have actually becommed more "known" in the
norwegian scene , but other than that i dont think many have
heard of it. But we are trying to make some ground breaking
demo .. but yet it has not have not suceeded
But i hope we are gonna make something for tp.. but that's
just if those damn coders would get their ass in gear
you can check some releases at : www.neutralzone.org/~thumbz

<|ps|> what about nocturnal, those are more known :)

<xhale> yeah .. their pretty known i think.. but i'm really a pretty
fresh member of nocturnal .. so i wouldnt know that much of
their history.. but i must say they have some cool
productions, and i dunno how it happend but suddenly i was a
                member ;D
x and x2 the intros rule!!
too bad lone wolf isent active anymore.. cause he is a VERY
                good musician
nocturnal has also got some new very good members called
darkhalo and atom.. think their both from usa.. but anyway..
                they rock! ;D

<|ps|> and next is theralite.. now where the fuck is argus? ive been
trying to talk with him for over 1 week now..

<xhale> yeah damn.. argus is always gone.. he hasent showd up for
3 months or so.. and this happend in may/june also.. . i hope
he's ok. But anyway.. without argus , theralite is kind of
dead.. and that is very bad , since theralite is a good
group , with many good musicians.
hope he turns up soon.. since i also have about 4-5 releases
                just waiting to get released..

<|ps|> oh man, you in too many groups.. whats the story of
               kalamity? :)

<xhale> hehe.. well.. kalamity was actually my first "real" group ..
i joind them in 96/97 or so.. . and i must say kalamity kind
of pushed my scene career forwards a little.. since i think
noone had even heard of me before that.. and in one period
about 1-2 years ago .. we won every party we attended an
                intro/demo .. ( wasent that many party's but anyway;D) .. I
must also say that cpix (the coder and founder of kalamity)
is also a good friend of mine.. i must also thank sunday and
optic for making very cool gfx for our demos!!

<|ps|> and last but not least your latest new group.. whats it about?

<xhale> well.. miasmah is kind of just some kick i got when i was
making my own page .. . i have just started learning some
flash. . and now i'm addicted.. so i figured why not make
an own group now that theralite is almost dead and
everything, and i tend to overproduce music/gfx all the time.
And the main idea is to have a group where i am the only
member and will release my music/gfx once a week or so , and
get some guest etc. later.. . but we'll see how it grows to
be. dunno iff i'm gonna keep it going or not.. but i think i
                will ;D

<|ps|> what was your first computer?

        <xhale> my first computer was a c64.. . think i was about 8-10 years
old when i got it.. that was the good old days

<|ps|> what was your first demo? :)

<xhale> hmmm.. my first demo.. let's see..
that must have been some demo i made with the phrenetik guys
back in 95 i think.. . think it was some birthday demo.. then
i almost havent started making any music.. but they asked me
for some music and i did even though it sucked ;D
i havent been in the scene that long realy.. but it feels
                very long ;D

<|ps|> not that you made, that you seen :)

<xhale> shit.. hehe ok. well .. the first demo i have seen.. hooh..
what was that.. . that must have been unreal by future crew
or something.. dont think i recall the FIRST demo i have
ever seen .. but it might have been that one.. but i do
remember that i was mighty impressed !

<|ps|> hehe :) so you do gfx and music, what tools do you use for
               that?

<xhale> hmm.. for music i started in sb studio (sound blaster
studio).. but it didnt take long untill i discovered
fast tracker2 , and i have used that ever since i think..
lately ive been trying to learn some cubase.. and also been
using mad tracker to optimize old tunes a bit also. And of
course i use my new yamaha cs2x and sound forge .. that's my
                music tools.

        <|ps|> what about gfxwise? :)

<xhale> comming.. for gfx i'm using mainly psp (paint shop pro) and
photoshop.. . At school i'm also working with illustrator
and quarkxpress.. . witch is exelent progs. And of course ..
lately i've been discovering the wonders of flash ;D.. i
think i'm addicted!... other than that i have my scanner to
                attend to!.

<|ps|> where do you get inspired to track/pixel?

<xhale> hmm.. . i've been inspired by lots of different music up
through the time.. but actually i think i can just sit down
and make music and gfx without inspiration also.. . But i
very often get inspiration to gfx from just walking down a
street watching the enviroments... i can mention some
                musicians i get inspiration from..

        <|ps|> go right ahead

        <xhale> photek,adam F, Niels petter molvr(norwegian guy),
                drum island/alana(also norwegian guys)..Fsol , aphex twin..
and of course more.. but i cant remember everything now ;D

<|ps|> are you ready for demojournal topquiz show contest?

        <xhale> ok shoot..

        <|ps|> 1.whats your favorite color?

<xhale> hmm.. i think it's some mix of gray and blue.. .

<|ps|> 2.what was the most interesting movie/book you ever seen/read?

<xhale> the most interesting movie i've seen i think is a clockwork
orange by stanley cubrick.. that film is wierd.. .
when it comes to book.. i think it must be the book
"naiv super" by the norwegian guy Erlend loe.

<|ps|> 3.what is your favorite word?

<xhale> my favorite word..hmm damn.. what would that be? that's
something i never think about.. i guess i say damn pretty
much .. so maybe that's my favorite word.. but then again is
damn a pretty ugly word to have as favorite.

<|ps|> 4.if you died and could be respawned into an animal what
                 would you be?

<xhale> hmm.. that must be a bunny.. since their so cute.. and as i
remember when i had a bunny i took very good care of it. but
then again bunny's do live boring lives.. .

<|ps|> 5.what is the meaning of life?

<xhale> the meaning of life is to give out a cool cd , get a great
girlfriend and establish a secure home.. haha.. or maybe
that's a little standard? (would also like to be rich.. but
                who wouldnt?)

        Session Close: Sat Nov 06 00:48:06 1999

        Session Start: Sat Nov 06 02:03:46 1999

<|ps|> so do you have any pets?

<xhale> well.. as i was saying.. i had a bunny once.. i was really
found of it.. but unfortunatly it brock it's back.. and a
bunny with a broken back is no good bunny.. so we had to put
it to sleep :( no other pets i think..

<|ps|> what was the bunnys name?

<xhale> it was a very ordenary name wich is "prikken" (spot in
                english)

<|ps|> well then lets have a minute of silence in the name of our
               little fury friend spot :/

<xhale> yes that would be a nice thing to do.

<|ps|> there, finished, so what are your favorite demos of all times?

<xhale> hmm.. hehe the ultimate question.. well..
damn i realy dunno .. but i think it must be some orange
demos.. iff i consider the demos i have liked most at the
time they got released.. . otherwise i like replay demos
most. i dont think i can point out 1 demo..

<|ps|> define style and design :)

<xhale> shit.. now thats a tricky question
uhm.. how do you define design? .. this question is way out
of my league ;D i'm afraid i dont have an answer ;D

        <|ps|> try style then :)

<xhale> hmm.. . shit.. this is a question i would need a week or so
to answer to.. i'm afraid again i dont have an answer..
sorry :( ask me again in some years maybe ;D

        <|ps|> :P ok, what are your favorite coders/gfx/musicians? :)

<xhale> let's see.. favorite musicians must be b-states, muffler
                & optic i think...
favorite graphicians is visualize, thor, optic and fthr.
favorite coders is: jmagic, statix (optic tells me to say
Subagazi)? and i would say i like baloo and the replay
                guys ;D

<|ps|> what was the best demoparty you ever attended?

<xhale> i think that must have been either icing96 or theparty98..
icing because i loved the atmosphere there , and had a great
time.. . the party98 because of all the exelent ppl that was
there and that i must say denmark is a great country to have
a party in ;D (also loved the contribs at tp98)

<|ps|> so what was your demo top5 of tp8? would it be like the
               official results?

<xhale> noo.. don't like the winner demo by nomad that much.. i
think it is kind of boring.. sure it's good 3d etc.. but its
the kind of demo you see one time i think..
otherwise i think it would be much as the official results..

=====! demo !==================================================================

        Singularity by Satori (Zden+Distance)
        Found at www.scene.org
        5th place at Fiasko'99

        System requirements:
        Pentium 200 or higher, 3MB HD, Vesa2-video, Midas-soundcard

        The demo:
The frenzy of parties has slowed down a bit, I can't review
certain winners (grmblno3dcardgrmbl...), and I promised Distance to
have a look at Singularity, so I'll do now. The first thing I noticed
was that the begin-effect was being shown way too long. It just
keeps going on ... then I hit myself on the head. Remember Timeless,
Ambience & Luminati by Tran? It's the same idea: one long changing
effect that follows the music. No different parts, no stories, no 3D.
The main effect is plasmas, not the simple sine/cosine type, but
beautiful hi-color versions that work (I suppose) with height-maps.
There are almost always two visible at the same time: spirals,
snowflake-like structures, things like you see in a kaleidoscope
etc, with colors floating from yellow to red to purple, and every
single variant in-between. There are black borders above & below,
maybe to imitate the "wide-screen look" that resulted from Trans
21-bit mode with the weird refresh rate, or maybe it's just to cut
down on the amount of pixels to calculate. On top of that, there are
a few things like the title and the credits, a fading hand, short
thoughts that try to stay unreadable,... The music is a slow,
repetitive and relaxing synth-tune, with a distinct beat that the
changing plasmas are synced with. I like it, but I don't really
like the 100% white flashes that also follow the beat. I know it's
an easy way to go from any screen to any other screen, but when
it's done too often, you end up with a demo that's a white screen
        1/4th of the time.

        Worth the download ?
Singularity is a special kind of demo. It has not hyper-fast code,
impressive pictures or flashy design, but it's beautiful and
relaxing. A minor bad point is the stability, especially when you
quit with ESC it tends to kills command.com. And on one occasion,
when I ran it after playing some game, some colors were inverted.
Maybe a few variables that aren't initialized to zero or something?
Apart from that, it's a bit strange, and you should find out for
yourself whether you like it or not. I did, and I regret there's no
loop-option as the demos used to have, to watch it longer than the
        standard 4 minutes.
                                                                        Seven

[editor: these are called mood demos. If your not in the mood to
watch them they suck. If you are in the right mood they
look awesome. I think seven wasn't in the mood :) You should
try downloading it and running it, maybe you will see what
lies beyond weird plasmas and repetitive music.]

=====! intro !=================================================================

        Catch22 by Replay
        4th at the gathering 99 (i think)

Since we are in a mood productions review, i'll take a go at one of
the best intros released this year. The concept is simple, You are
looking through a cam-corder recording the void. Light lifeforms
twirl around with a radial blur as the music develops. Before you
notice you are drifting in deep space watching funny lights flowing
in the void and an hipnotizing song echoing in your hear.
The intro seems too long and too short in the same time.
Misteriously hypnotizing and mind relieving. Not the typical replay
joint, far from it. I was really impressed by this change of style
from replay guys at the time and i hope they will go more into other
styles like they did here. Experimenting is the key.
                                                                           ps

=====! music !=================================================================

	A little piano tune
	Workbench
	Level-d release #54

Nice piano tune, with evolving sad melody. A good tune, but I
really don't know why it's in mp3 format. It could be released
in some sort of midi format and we wouldn't have to download so
many megs. Worth downloading for those who like piano-only tunes.

	cloaks
	viinikala/digitalartists
	tdr#135

Very electronically sounding track with filtered sounds and
good melody refreshes a bit fossil tdr production. It reminds
me on something but I don't know on what - maybe on the feeling
of tracks by distance when he started releasing. A good release
after some worse (like DJ Rio). I hope it brings the tdr members
to idea of trying something completely different and innovating.

	Magma EP
	Elysis
	www.noisemusic.org

First song, "Magma" sounds like a mix of music from System Shock
clone game with computer sounds. Typical ambient electronical sounds
in a very fast song with repetitive rhythm. It's plus is that the
rhythm is very catchy and it would make a great atmosphere in a game.
Second song is "Tension" and starts with repetition of sounds like
distance would do. Some melodies come to it, but they disappear that
fast as they came. The whole song turns out to some mix of sounds
that form a rhythm with some secondary sounds. Not much to say.
Elysis can do catchy rhythmical parts with a bit of ambience, but
if you expect something more, you may be disappointed.
                                                                       tryhuk

=====! question !==============================================================

        > question of the week:
        > tp9 or no tp9?

        despite of lame lame rules
        way too expensive tickets
        and all the flame
yes, i'll go to tp9. see you there!
        -melwyn

        tp.
        -"Eigil Haugen"

        Bananas with marmelade and pepper
        -Jean Nine

Why not? I am anxious to see the releases of the last big party from
1999. I am not sure if they will be good, I was a little
dissapointment by Assembly. I hope for a demo from Byterapers, or
maybe from FC in this party.
        -"Michael Kargas"

        Yes to TP9!
        -AmNeSiA

        no tp9 visiting.
        yes tp9 downloading.
        and WHERE IS MY VIDEOTAPE?
        -Sagacity

tp9, ofcourse.even tho' some people dislike the party, the party is
        ofcourse what you make it.
        -baloo

no tp9 for me this year. ill really miss it tho, even if ill be at
a pizzicato five concert in tokyo during tp9 :/
        -tmk

if there is a bustrip, i'll be there
        -"Christophe Van Reeth"

I'm not going to attend that "demo"-party because of the organizer's
attitude (I know only what I read in c.s.i.p.d, but that was enough
for me) and because I don't have a car...
        -Malte

        No TP9, because
It's too far away (for me) and also too expensive.
It's too big, I think you can only gather that much people by
going commercial and attracting lots of gamers.
        -Seven

=====! quote !=================================================================

<melw> yep. i kinda like this shitty party. there's a fucking much of
these quakers. but sceners are here, too.

[editor: live from dreamhack99 while organizers are playing quake
on the big screen despite morph been to them and handed in
Dreams2 CD for them to show some demos]
